Wai-o-tapu is associated with volcanic activity back about 160,000 years and is located on the edge of the largest volcanic caldera within the Taupo Volcanic Plateau and is considered to be New Zealand’s most colourful and diverse geothermal sightseeing attraction.
Aratiatia Hydro dam and Rapids.
The first hydro dam in the Waikato River. The Aratiatia Rapids are one of the river’s outstanding
Features.At 12.00 noon the gates are opening and releasing 65,000 litres of water per second and the road bridge across the top of the Rapids provides an excellent vantage point from which to see theRapids.
Huka Falls
At the Huka Falls, the Waikato River which is normally 100mtr wide, is squeezed through a 20 metre
wide gorge and over a 20mtr drop.Every second the average of 200,000 litres of water gushes through the gorge and flows over 8mtr beyond to create a beautiful blue/green pool. The Waikato River is the longest river at 430km in New Zealand.
Wairakei Geothermal Steam Field
Commissioned in the 1958, the powerplant is situated above a large geothermal system containing water at temperatures between 230-260 deg C. Currently about 5,000 tonnes per hour of fluid is taken from the reservoir. Currently there are 60 wells in production. The depth of these wells vary from 500 metre to 2 km.

Lake Taupo is the largest surface lake in the Southern Hemisphere at 619 sq. km. Lake Taupo lies in a series of volcanic craters; its serenity masks the scene of the country’s most violent volcanic eruption of the past several thousand years.The largest river entering in Lake Taupo is the Tongariro River. The waterfront is the perfect venue to have lunch, while enjoying the view of the 3 important Volcanoes, Mount Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhue.
